Snow
This was the scene I woke up to on Monday morning - thick snow.
Not that unusual in many parts of the world. But it was making headlines in the UK - in particular, south-east England - where it was the heaviest snowfall in 15 years.
It looked beautiful. But I was nervous it could have forced me to cancel my travel plans as I was taking an early evening flight to Johannesburg.
Heathrow airport terminal 5 - normally an oasis of calm - resembled a camp-out. Thousands were sitting on the floors, or queuing..waiting for news of flights.
In the end, announcements were made declaring all european and domestic flights cancelled, with a handful of international flights operating. I dont know why they couldnt have made this clearer to a. prevent people going to the airport and b. to help people hanging around leave more quickly once they knew their flight was a no-show.
Luckily my flight was one of those cleared for take-off...though it was delayed for 2 hours. I was relieved to be flying.
